Are you running a houseboat in Kerala? If yes, then this post is for you.
There are few things I know about houseboat biz in Kerala. All I know is a houseboat stay which my wifey and a friend which was many many years ago. So, going with that faint recollection and ideas picked from people who have visited recently, I feel our house boat can do much, much better biz than the cookie cutter experience they are having right now.
This is what I infer about the typical house house experience is like....
- Pick travelers from boat jetty
- Offer then welcome drink
- Then a cruise...
- Lavish Kerala food with fish fry
- Tour through the backwaters
- Fishing experience or a toddy stop, or buying fish
- Night boarding ( in few cases)
- Departing by next day...
( A typical thing which is done by 99% of the house boat managers or owners)
Owning an houseboat involves a big investment, which goes beyond lakhs. On top of it there's daily overheads, on the cost of running it - from providing power, cleanliness, safety and cost for the staff.
With these expenses, there are many things which can be tried out....I'm just listing few absurd to common sense ideas which can be tried out....
1. How about getting a Shikara in our backwaters ( the boats from Dal lake). Get a Kashmiri couple in their typical costume to give that feel. Offer then tea and other offer, which is a part of Kashmir thing.
2. Tie a coracle behind the houseboat and give passengers some good feel of the water ( This might be risky but done correctly ( like a banana boat), it might be cool experience.
3. Give customers, couple of free stuffs when they leave your house house. ( A book mark with the picture of houseboat or their own picture on a book mark ). Give something unique made out of coconut shell, or a husk. ( Give these as a surprise)
4. For families with kids here's an engagement stuff. While they are on the boat, someone can teach them how to make hat or ball or some other stuff made of coconut leaves. Let the boat stop by a bank, to let a lady in, who can unique art forms. She will also earn some 300 bucks or so for the 1 hr spent.
( If you like to get more ideas, like these then invite me for a full stay in your houseboat, and I will suggest few more)
